The One With the Smoothie …

A Staple in My Plant-Based Journey

For over 17 years, I’ve embraced a vegetarian and plant-based lifestyle. It’s been a journey of growth, learning, and, let’s be honest, occasional struggles. The holidays, for example, can be a challenging time for staying on track. Between baking traditional family recipes and indulging in festive treats (those red and green chocolate wrappers are hard to resist!), I’ve had my moments of wavering.

But even during these times, one thing has remained constant: my daily smoothie. It’s been my anchor, a small victory that keeps me grounded in my commitment to health. No matter how chaotic the day or how off-track my diet gets, I know that by having this smoothie, I’m giving my body a dose of essential nutrition. And what a relief that is!

The Beginning of My Smoothie Journey

It all started in 2014 when I received a Nutribullet as a gift. I began experimenting with basic fruit and green smoothies, but as I delved deeper into the world of nutrition, I discovered the power of superfoods. Over the years, I’ve refined my recipe, incorporating ingredients that not only boost the nutritional profile but also taste great when blended together.

As I explored sites such as NutritionFacts.org and immersed myself in books by leaders in plant-based medicine like Dr. Michael Greger, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., and Dr. T. Colin Campbell, I became captivated by the wealth of knowledge available. I’ve spent countless hours watching videos, watching conferences, and diving into discussions about the incredible benefits of a plant-based diet and the simplicity of incorporating superfoods into everyday life.

My journey has also included listening to hundreds of podcasts on health, natural healing, and disease prevention through diet. While the sheer volume of information can feel daunting, starting with trusted resources can provide clarity. As you continue learning, you’ll gather insights that empower you to make dietary choices that work for your unique lifestyle.

Over the years, I realized the importance of stepping up my health routine. Over the past decade, I’ve made gradual, intentional changes to my diet, incorporating powerful ingredients that I believe have had a meaningful impact. At 59, I’m grateful to say I’m not on any prescription medications—a rarity for my age, from what I’ve learned. My diet, along with the daily supplements I’ve introduced, seems to be helping me manage a genetic predisposition to high blood pressure and keep hypertension at bay.

I encourage you to dive into the research, explore these amazing superfoods, and see how a plant-based diet could play a role in your journey to better health. Even small steps can lead to meaningful, lasting changes!

Here’s what goes into my smoothie and why I love each ingredient. You can tap on the name of the highlighted ingredients for more information on the health benefits of each:

  • Blueberries & Cherries: Antioxidant-rich and naturally sweet, these fruits form the smoothie’s flavorful base.
  • Plant-Based Milk (Almond or Cashew): Creamy and versatile, it adds a smooth texture while being dairy-free.
  • Amla Powder: Known for its incredible antioxidant properties, Amla also supports cholesterol, blood sugar regulation, and more. (Pro tip: the tartness is masked perfectly in this smoothie!)
  • Ground Flaxseed: A great source of omega-3s, fiber, and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Wheat Germ: High in fiber and B vitamins, it’s a classic ingredient that supports hair health and longevity.
  • Cacao Powder: Aids in blood circulation and gut health.
  • Cranberry Powder: Great for urinary tract health, dental health, and skin.
  • Ceylon Cinnamon: Balances blood sugar and has anti-inflammatory benefits—make sure to use Ceylon for the best results.
  • Turmeric & Black Pepper: A powerful anti-inflammatory duo, essential for joint and gut health.
  • Amazing Grass Green Superfoods Powder: A blend of fruits, veggies, probiotics, and fiber for a nutritional boost.
  • Plant-Based Protein Powder: I prefer Orgain’s chocolate or vanilla flavors, which add protein, will leave you satiated and they are delicious!
  • Banana: The finishing touch, adding natural sweetness and creaminess.

Daily Ritual of Wellness

Blending this smoothie has become a part of my daily routine, not just for its nutritional value but also for the comfort of knowing I’m doing something good for my body. It’s more than just a drink—it’s a small act of self-care that sets a positive tone for the rest of the day.

If you’re looking for a way to add more nutrition to your routine without overcomplicating things, this smoothie is a great place to start. It’s customizable, easy to make, and tastes amazing.

I typically purchase all the superfoods featured in this video on Amazon. I’ve found it to be more cost-efficient, convenient, and it allows me to buy in larger quantities. Plus, some ingredients, like Amla Powder, or Ceylon Cinnamon, can be harder to find in local stores! I’ve included affiliate links to the products that I use personally and recommend.
